Reducing Door-to-Floor: Improving Readiness of New Hires through cGMP Hands-on Biopharmaceutical Training

We will immerse trainees in a rigorous digital and hands‐on training program, comprised of more than one hundred (100) hours of cGMP‐ and regulatory‐based curricula

Industry Need

Traditional STEM curricula lack practical biomanufacturing experience, leaving graduates unprepared for industry jobs. This results in companies struggling to find qualified hires and often resorting to poaching employees from competitors.

Approach

The project will train 40 biomanufacturers for immediate jobs with NIIMBL partners through 16+ hours of online training and 80 hours of hands-on training at NCTM. Afterward, SME and NIIMBL industry partners will help place trainees in jobs.

Impacts

Delivered a hybrid program (five online modules + two weeks hands‑on upstream/downstream at NCTM) that cut onboarding time and costs by preparing job‑ready entrants in cGMP operations, documentation, and quality systems.

Created a pipeline of 47 trained individuals (exceeding proposal by 7) across students and professionals, directly meeting NIIMBL members’ talent needs.

Validated outcomes via industry interviews and placements (e.g., Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol‑Myers Squibb, Merck, plus startups), demonstrating immediate employer benefit.

Informed continuous improvement by modifying existing NCTM modules based on participant feedback and planning train‑the‑trainer options and open enrollment for sustainability.

Value Statement/Outcomes

The project produced 47 ACBM graduates who completed >100 hours of cGMP/regulatory training plus an intensive two‑week lab practicum, earning the Advanced Certificate in Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing. Measurable outcomes include exceeded enrollment targets, reduced onboarding needs/costs for employers, and documented interviews/placements with major biopharma firms—demonstrating strong ROI for members and the industry. The project demonstrated a model that can be scaled nationally.

Outputs/Deliverables

Program structure: 5 asynchronous online courses + 2 weeks hands‑on (microbial/mammalian processing, single‑use/fixed systems, chromatography, documentation).

Participation metrics: 47 total (Students 32, Educators 1, Professionals 14); ACBM certificates awarded.

Employer outcomes: Graduates interviewed/hired by regional and national companies (e.g., Lonza, Fujifilm Diosynth, Cytovance, Boehringer Ingelheim, BMS, Merck).

Sustainability plans: Open enrollment offerings, train‑the‑trainer programs, and targeted outreach (e.g., veterans, transitioning service members, military spouses).
